Money is a touchy subject among Christians, as we all have different perspectives. However, we cannot deny that money is a valuable tool that influences every area of our lives. The Bible offers guidance and advice on the subject of money, from the necessity for financial discipline to the value of giving and the dangers of greed and materialism.

In this article, we will look at some of the most powerful and thought-provoking Bible verses about money and how they might help us live more successful and meaningful lives.

God’s plan for us is not poverty.

God’s plan for us is certainly not poverty. God is the true source of wealth, and he is ready to provide for all our needs.

  1. "I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11 NIV
  2. And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19 NIV
  3. The blessing of the Lord makes a person rich, and he adds no sorrow with it. Proverbs 10:22 NLT
  4. Remember the Lord your God. He is the one who gives you power to be successful, in order to fulfill the covenant he confirmed to your ancestors with an oath. Deuteronomy 8:18
  5. Wealth and honor come from you; you are the ruler of all things. In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all. 1 Chronicles 29:12 NIV
  6. Praise the Lord . Blessed are those who fear the Lord , who find great delight in his commands. Wealth and riches are in their houses, and their righteousness endures forever. Psalms 112:1, 3
  7. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. 2 Corinthians 9:8 NIV
  8. The Lord will not let the godly go hungry, but he refuses to satisfy the craving of the wicked. Proverbs 10:3 NLT

Don’t be too desperate for money.

Greed and materialism are two characteristics that should never be found in te life of a Christian. Money is important but it should never be a god.

  1. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. 1 Timothy 6:10 NIV
  2. Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5 NIV
  3. “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. Matthew 6:24 NIV
  4. Dishonest money dwindles away, but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow. Proverbs 13:11
  5. But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction. 1 Timothy 6:9 NLT
  6. Those who love money will never have enough. How meaningless to think that wealth brings true happiness! Ecclesiastes 5:10 NLT

God expects us to work hard for money.

There is dignity in labour. God expects us to work for the money we get. He will bless the work of our hands and give us ease. However, if we do not work, there will be nothing to bless.

  1. Sow your seed in the morning, and at evening let your hands not be idle, for you do not know which will succeed, whether this or that, or whether both will do equally well. Ecclesiastes 11:6 NIV
  2. A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest — and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man. Proverbs 24:33–34 NIV
  3. Do not love sleep or you will grow poor; stay awake and you will have food to spare. Proverbs 20:13
  4. Do you see a man diligent and skillful in his business? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men. Proverbs 22:29 AMPC
  5. All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty. Proverbs 14:23 NIV

God expects us to be generous to others.

Every Christian should be generous and give freely to others. Give to the less privileged around you and use your money towards the advancement of the gospel.

  1. The stingy are eager to get rich and are unaware that poverty awaits them. Proverbs 28:22 NIV
  2. Those who give to the poor will lack nothing, but those who close their eyes to them receive many curses. Proverbs 28:27 NIV
  3. The wicked borrow and never repay, but the godly are generous givers. Psalms 37:21 NLT
  4. Just as the rich rule the poor, so the borrower is servant to the lender. Proverbs 22:7 NLT

Financial advice in the Bible

The Bible offers us sound financial advice telling us to avoid debts and being a guarantor as we might not be able to pay back and this may lead to financial ruin.

  1. But divide your investments among many places, for you do not know what risks might lie ahead. Ecclesiastes 11:2 NLT
  2. My child, if you have put up security for a friend’s debt or agreed to guarantee the debt of a stranger — if you have trapped yourself by your agreement and are caught by what you said — follow my advice and save yourself, for you have placed yourself at your friend’s mercy.Now swallow your pride; go and beg to have your name erased. Don’t put it off; do it now! Don’t rest until you do. Proverbs 6:1–4 NLT
